Tutoring: Tuesdays and Thursdays @ 7:45 - 8:45 am School Year: 2019-2020
Welcome!
Materials: First and foremost! Bring your chromebook, always! If I can share, I will. But if I have nothing to share, it is still up to you to find a writing utensil and complete the assignment by hand.
Tissues for allergy season is always on my wish list. Please bring a box.
Grading: Grades will be placed in three categories: level 1, level 2, and level 3. Tests and projects/labs count the most (Level 3). There will be a few assignments that will have strict deadlines. Life outside of high school is full of deadlines and you must be prepared to meet them. Level one grades are dedicated to participation grades.
Attendance: You must come to school regularly. I can’t tell you how many times students have wondered why they had a low grade. When I mention that it is because they are rarely here, they are shocked. Then they have to deal with the APs and find time to make up their work and attendance. The Attendance Policy this year says your excused absences will count against you, just as unexcused absences have in the past. That means that it is easier to receive no credit for this class if you miss. And you are a senior now. No credits can cause you to not graduate.
Please see me if you need to make up absences.
WARNING!! THERE ARE ASSIGNMENTS IN MY CLASS THAT YOU CAN’T MAKE UP IF YOU HAVE AN UNEXCUSED ABSENCE. So, remember to turn in your doctors’ notes or notes from your parents. If you need to make up assignments, you can check with me.
Tests: There are tests for almost everything in the “real world”. If you want your driver’s license or a job as a waiter, you have to take a test… without notes. Please don’t ask if you can use your notes on major tests. I will have to say `` no''. If you need help with memorizing, set up a time during FIT when we can study together and I can get you on your way. Make up tests must be scheduled. Only those students with an excused absence may schedule an appointment to make-up any missed tests. Send me an email if you wish to set up a time and don’t be late to our designated time. Our time is valuable.
Blend, Quizlet, NoRedInk, HMH (our science book), etc: There are a few of the programs we will use consistently. Everyone will need to sign up for these programs. I will help enroll you if you need help. And remember to bring your Chromebook.
Mrs. Hughes is having trouble with understanding Blend (user unfriendly or maybe I’m unfriendly to Blend). However, I have made a class website that I will try to connect to Blend. You can find the web address in the heading of this paper.
Skills Throughout the Year: Every class we will be working on writing, recording data, graphing, reading, and vocabulary. You will have a notebook of your field studies and labs. I want you to see your progress develop.
Late Work: All assignments are due on their designated due date. If you do not turn in the assignment by YOUR designated time period, you will not get full credit for it. Everyone here has accommodations and the class is designed to fit those accommodations. Make-Up Work: Students with unexcused absences will NOT BE ALLOWED TO MAKE UP WORK MISSED.
Laboratory Safety: You must know and follow all laboratory safety rules when performing a lab in science. Any student who is seen using unsafe lab practices will not be able to participate in the lab and will receive a zero for that assignment.
Homework: Homework will be given on a regular basis and will be due during your next scheduled class meeting. Do not allow your homework to build up. It will become overwhelming and you and I will have meltdowns.
This year I will have a cutoff time before the 6 weeks grades are due(any Wednesday before grades are due).
Rules and Regulations: The basic rules are on the header of this sheet. These three rules will get you far in every area of life I can think of. You all are almost adults. I expect you to adhere to the school policy; however, there are a few rules that are a “must” with me.
Be on time. We have a lot to get through and I don’t want you to miss important information. Being on time is something that we, as adults, have to do. It shows respect for another person’s time. So here’s the deal this year
-If you're on time (completely inside classroom, ideally in your seat), I leave you alone.
- if you’re late (the bell has rung, people are running to class, some people are inside the classroom doing what they need to do, and you are still in the hall or standing at the door), I will mark you tardy.
-If you are ten minutes or more late, you must go to the office and get a tardy pass. When you get the tardy pass, return to class.
Tardies can add up and you will have to “make up” lost time as you would for your absences.
Turn in your phones at the beginning of class. Turn the volume down and put them in the caddy at the front of the class. Each student has an assigned cubby. Do not return to your phone until I give you permission (There will be times that I want you to use your phone for a lesson.).
If you must talk on your phone for an emergency, I won’t stop you, but I will document how many times you have an emergency. Make it short and sweet.
If you continue to refuse to put your phone up, I will keep it for the period.
If you argue and refuse to give me your phone, I will contact the Security and they will take it to the principal. You will more than likely have to pay a fine to have it returned.
If you argue and say it is an emergency, I will contact your home and speak with your parents or guardians about the emergency and provide you with the assistance you need.
Emergencies. Explain to your parents/guardians that they must call the main office (512-414-2505) or my office number (512-414-7251) to get a hold of you in an emergency.
Classroom Dismissal Policy: You are not allowed to leave the classroom without permission. You will be dismissed at the end of each class period by your teacher, not the bell. When everyone is sitting quietly in his/her seat, with their materials put neatly away, you will be dismissed. There may be times when you are allowed to stand and wait for the bell, but stay behind the tape. Crowding the doorway is a fire hazard.
