Rules in Class: Be Respectful, Be Responsible, Be Ready
2019-2020 English IV Syllabus
Teacher: Morgen Hughes Website: hugheshues.weebly.com
Phone: 512-414-7251 E-mail: [email protected]
Conference Hours: 2nd period and 5th period Room 266
Tutoring Times: Tuesday and Thursday - By appointment 7:45 - 8:45 am
Welcome! You made it. In just about nine months you will walk across the stage and shake the principal’s hand. And she will give you a piece of paper that says you made it through high school. Congratulations!
But you aren’t there…yet. You must first pass my class to graduate. Believe me. It’s worth it.
-If you're on time (completely inside classroom, ideally in your seat), I leave you alone.
- if you’re late (the bell has rung, people are running to class, some people are inside the classroom doing what they need to do, and you are still in the hall or standing at the door), I will mark you tardy.
-If you are ten minutes or more late, you must go to the office and get a tardy pass. When you get the tardy pass, return to class.
Tardies can add up and you will have to “make up” lost time as you would for your absences.
If you must talk on your phone for an emergency, I won’t stop you, but I will document how many times you have an emergency. Make it short and sweet.
If you continue to refuse to put your phone up, I will keep it for the period. If you argue and refuse to give me your phone, I will contact the Security and they will take it to the principal. You will more than likely have to pay a fine to have it returned.
If you argue and say it is an emergency, I will contact your home and speak with your parents or guardians about the emergency and provide you with the assistance you need.
Emergencies. Explain to your parents/guardians that they must call the main office (512-414-2505) or my office number (512-414-7251) to get a hold of you in an emergency.

- Materials: First and foremost! Bring your pen/pencil and your chromebook, always! If I can share, I will. But if I have nothing to share, it is still up to you to find a writing utensil and complete the work by hand. We will be doing a lot of writing, so invest in a composition book. Any style or size. This is for your writer’s notebook.
- Grading: I will have three levels of grades – Levels 1, 2, & 3. Level 3 grades are worth the most and are usually for major projects or tests. There will be a few assignments that will have STRICT deadlines. Life outside of high school is full of deadlines and you must be prepared to meet them. Level 1 grades are for participation (discussion, activity, cooperation, etc...) and will usually result in a 0, 50, or a 100.
- Attendance: You must come to school regularly and on time. I can’t tell you how many times students have wondered why they had a low grade. When I mention that it is because they are rarely here, they are shocked. Then they have to deal with the APs and find time to make up their work and attendance on Saturdays or after school. The Attendance Policy this year says you excused absences will count against you, just as unexcused absences have in the past. That means that it is easier to receive no credit for this class if you miss. And you are a senior now. No credits or NCs can cause you to not graduate.
- Homework: Homework will be given on a regular basis and will be due during your next scheduled class meeting. Do not allow your homework to build up. It will become overwhelming and you and I will have meltdowns. This year I will have a cutoff time (any Wednesday before grades are due).
- Tests: There are tests for almost everything in the “real world”. If you want your driver’s license or a job as a waiter, you have to take a test… without notes. Please don’t ask if you can use your notes on major tests. I will have to say” no”. If you need help with memorizing, set up a time during FIT and we can study together and I can get you on your way.
- Blend, Quizlet, No Red Ink, etc...: These are a few of the programs we will use. Everyone must sign up and must remember your school email. On Blend I will send reminders from time to time for tests, homework, and special occasions. I'm still working on getting Blend functional, but my website (address at the top) will be used like Blend would.
- Skills Throughout the Year: Every class we will be working on writing, reading, grammar, roots and affixes, and vocabulary. We will also be working on problem-solving skills, creative and critical thinking, and analysis.
- Be on time.
